When passions are stirred about historic buildings, public
commissions are often called upon to make decisions on topics they may
know little about. Unbiased professional historic resource reports can
shed light on the question. This is the story of an old hodgepodge of
buildings on the banks of Codornices Creek in Berkeley. The question was,
how old? A yellowed newspaper found in the wall, and methodical research
in turn of the century tax records were important clues. In the end, they
led to the fair resolution of a public process, as well as the discovery
of a fascinating gold miner and inventor from Berkeley's past. |
